The very first step we take when we work with a new client is to spend a few weeks to get to know their business as well as we can as an outsider.  We do an email marketing assessment before we start writing or sending anything.

We do that so when we recommend the email marketing strategy for them, it is appropriate to help meet their goals.

I had a client balk at this key part of our methodology recently so I explained it like this.

Have you ever seen anyone build a house without a blueprint?  How many floors, how many bedrooms, central heating or air conditioning, pool, family room?  Decisons have to me made before you even call for concrete or hammer the first nail.  Building would be impossible without a blueprint.

How about a roadmap?  When you head out for the weekend camping do you just start driving?  (I know some of you will but the purpose there is adventure, not geting to a destination)  If you have a destination, you can benefit from a roadmap.

Even buying a car has some requirements before you take your first test drive.  Budget, 2 or 4 door, hatch, sunroof, air, minivan, sports car are all factors you need to decide on before you head to the dealer.  Oh yeah, new or used?

Email marketing strategy is like that.  You need to take a step back and know how you want email to be used.  I take over so many ill concieved campaigns I can’t describe it.

It’s only from us having experience at designing email marketing strategy for companies of different industries with differing goals that we know that email marketing isn’t a one size fits all solution.

Make sure you’re using email to it’s most effective use.  Let us take review your plans and we’ll let you know if we can help out.
