Sometimes an example is the best way to show a lesson on building your email list.

You know Victoria’s Secret is a mega brand.  They have top notch marketers on board and follow best practices in their email campaigns.

But this one really stands out.  Look at the window below and I’ll give you four things you can do to improve your ability to build your email list.

One thing you can’t see easily but this is a pop under message.  Meaning it shows up as a pop up only when you leave the site.  It’s not intrusive and will offer you more subscribers just by adding it to your busy pages.

Next the offer is simple and clear.  There is even a bit of an incentive to motivate you:  “be THE FIRST TO KNOW about new products, special offers, store events and MORE.”  This is good copy and a great improvement over the bland “NEWSLETTER” appeal.

I think it’s important that they only ask for email address.  They know that the more information you ask for you less conversions you get.

Finally, they have a link to their privacy policy.  These days people are starting to read these and the people that do will know if you adhere to them.  So make sure you take them seriously.
