Hello this is Mitch Tarr, President and CEO of Zinmarketing.com. Today’s tip is a really interesting one. We’re going to talk about mobile applications and mobile email marketing as it relates to building your list. There are so Many people these days, and I won’t even quote the percentages because they keep going up at a pretty rapid pace, of people that are reading and engaging in their email on their phones, on their iPhones, or on their Androids or on their iPads. It’s a really, really big percentage.
So, what we’re going to talk about today is how to make sure that you are capitalizing on that when you are trying to build your list and add people to your leads list. So, let’s take a little example here. I’m reading away on my iPhone. Read, read, read… I’m reading an article written by the Motley Fool at ww.fool.com and as I’m reading through the article, towards the middle of this page you can see there’s a couple of links. And the bait is a free list of 9 high-yielding stocks. Well, that’s got my attention. I’d like a free list of 9 high-yielding stocks.
And you can see that the offer is pretty good. To learn the identity of these stocks instantly and for free all you have to do is click here now. So, pretty good call to action; pretty good offer. I’m on my phone so I just hit the button with my thumb and here I am at the landing page. And this is the same as any landing page process where you bring someone from an ad to a landing page. And this one is really well designed. There’s a little bit of branding. So you can see that you are at the Motley Fool still. You’re at the place where you’re expecting to be. It’s a free report. It’s in red, it’s top center. And then the headline is big and bold.
They’re not trying to hide the headline. They’re making it easy for you to read and find and to make sure that you’re arriving on the page that you expect to be on. And this headline is, well you can read it; “Secure your future with 9 rock-solid dividend stocks.” Pretty good headline. Now, this landing page is a two-parter. You can’t see everything on the phone. You have to scroll down a bit. So, I scroll down. I see the offer and basically it asks me; it simply says, “Enter your email address in the box below.” Nice and clean. It’s telling me what to do.
It only asks for email address, which is an excellent practice. If you are on a mobile phone you don’t want to spend too much time putting in name, first name, last name, a whole bunch of other information. Ask for the minimum amount of information that you can. And they’re using the click here button, or the “Click Here” as a call to action. Which is an excellent one. And they’ve got an exclamation point behind it to highlight it a bit. And this is generally a better marketing practice and you’ve probably heard me talk about this before.
This is a better marketing practice that using a submit button. The submit button is scattered everywhere and you’re not really submitting to anything. You want a “Click Here” you want a call to action button that say, “Join Now, Click Here, Sign Me Up, Send Me the Report, Give Me The Data, Let Me Know First, Put Me On The Inside.” Anything that has got a little more movement to it and a little bit more dramatic than “Submit.” So, that’s a good call to action. And this is a nice touch here, at the bottom it says, “This is a free service from the Motley Fool, credit card is not required.” So they’re just removing one barrier or one obstacle that might be in your head. And that just helps you to move forward a little bit more.
So, think of that if you can do it in your environment. It’s not taking that much real estate and it’s a nice touch in the mobile application. So, that’s a really excellent example of optimizing the email collection process or the lead generation process for mobile. And here’s what you can take away from this; if you were doing this, keep your design simple. It’s single column, the text is big, it’s easy to read, they use multiple colors, the brand is there, it’s really simple and elegant. And that works way better. The call to action in the copy is good and they’re using a good call to action with the button, the click here button. And also their call to action in the body copy of that very first page which I was reading. Those are also very good as well.
So, you can learn from that. And make sure your headline is big. Make sure it is easy to read. Make sure it matches what was in the call to action button that brought people to the landing page. And sell it a little bit. So, make it a bit exciting. Make it serve the interest of, the self-interest of the reader. And only ask for minimal information. This is not the time to have people trying to type and give them a little barrier here. Just ask for email address only. Get the process started. Acknowledge that they’re going to be on the phone. They might be standing. They might be walking. They might be lying around but they are definitely going to be behaving a little bit differently than they are at their desk.
So, a lot of people in email land just aren’t, they don’t seem to be acknowledging this big shift in the last 18-24 months. People have moved so much into mobile. So make sure that you’re aware of it. This is a good place to start with your data collection processes. And of course, www.zinmarketing.com/help is where you can find out more about us.
