Could be one thing, could be many things, or could be something that’s been slowly building up.
Go through this checklist and see how many of these areas you could improve.
1. Your collection methods. It all starts with how you are collecting your emails. The more open and transparent and more good reasons you give someone to hand over their email address, the better your list will behave. The more sneaky you are, the more spam complaints and unsubscribes you will receive.
2. How you use autoresponders. An autoresponder sends a series of messages to a new subscriber to your list to a predetermined time line. Overall you will build a better relationship and get better results if you do this. It answers the ‘why we are different’ question and the best part: it runs automatically in the background making it a very effective strategy.
3. What you say in your emails. If you use words like “I” and “me” and “we” a lot in your copy, you are saying the wrong thing. Use lots and lots of “you” and “your” to focus on your reader. Follow the principle you have to give before you get.
4. How your email looks. You are hurting your results if your email is long or has a complicated layout or covers many different topics. Keep it simple and you will get better results.
5. How often you send emails. You are hurting your results if you send too often or not often enough. Too often will cause people to unsubscribe and not often enough will cause spam complaints of just plain apathy. Find the right level for your audience.
Email marketing campaigns that work are part art and part science. You have to use good copywriting skills and good marketing skills to get it right. Then you’ll see it in your email marketing statistics.
