For those of you old enough to know your 60’s TV show trivia, you’ll really like this post.
Marlo Thomas starred on an ABC series from 1966 to 1971. I used to watch it in black and white…how quaint.
However, she’s now launching a new book and is doing the talk circuit. She did the proper job and mentioned her web site. www.marlothomas.com
What do I do? I race to the site and look for a signup form. I find it, and it’s a bit less prominent then I would suggest but it’s there on the home page.
There is a benefit to signing up: “Sign up for my e-mail newsletter so you’ll always know what’s happening.”
The ‘Sign Up’ button is nice and bold and they didn’t elect to use the dreaded ‘Submit’ option.
I signed up and wanted to see what happend next.
Then the advanced feature. Look at what she uses for a thank you page.
I’ve elected not to show you the whole charter member form but this two step sequence is a great opportunity to create a more powerful database.
You can see they are asking some great demographic data like Marital status and Sex. I can see some great targeted campaigns in the future.
Another way you can use this approach is to ask more questions in the second signup form. You can collect mailing address or further demographic data or more interests. You won’t get 100% adoption of course but you’ll get a subset of people who provide you more information…just because you ask for it!
And for the record…That Girl! kicked MTM’s butt.
