Your email marketing list is one of the keys to success for email marketing but many companies don’t know how to go about creating their in-house list. If you do these five things you’ll soon find you have an email marketing list of eager buyers and prospects that will flood your business with new orders.
Collect names on your site.
Do these four things. Make sure you have a optin form on the top left of your home page. According to eye tracking studies it’s the most seen part of a webpage.
Ensure you have a navigation button on you menu that says, ‘newsletter’ or ‘sign up’.
Make sure you have these two things on every page on your site.
And fourth, (not for the faint of heart) make sure you add a pop up window on your site. I know you don’t want to but you can double or triple your sign ups by doing this.
Give people a good reason to give you their email address.
Spell it out. It’s no longer enough to put the word ‘newsletter’ on your signup form and expect strong conversion. Write a benefit or two about why someone should sign up. Offer an incentive like a free report or a discount coupon.
Collect email addresses everywhere you go.
Every trade show, every event, every networking lunch. I moved to a new city in 2003 and met 1,000 people at breakfast and lunch networking events with the local Chamber of Commerce. Result: instant list of 1,000 people who knew (and remembered) me. Every phone conversation should end with “Can I (or May I for those of you know better) add you to my list?” Most will say yes.
Love your clients.
Is every customer transaction added to your ‘client list’ segment? Each one should be automatically added to your list after their first transaction.
Run list building campaigns.
Many customers I have will run Google PPC ads to a lead capture page in order to specifically build their email marketing list. A successful conversion IS a new email address. Sweepstakes, draws, and contests are also great ways to build lists. If you want to be proactive and invest in your list building use these tactics.
I think though the biggest key to building your email marketing list is to put some effort and enthusiasm into it. If you’re collecting 200 names per month now and your were to embrace these five strategies you could suddenly be collecting 1,000 names.
At the end of only one year, you’d be talking to over 12,000 people vs 2,400 people. That means that any email marketing campaigns you run could be FIVE times as effective. May I add you to my list?
