I’ll assume you know why an email autoresponder is important and here i’ll focus on what you can do to make your email autoresponders start to pay their way.
The single biggest mistake I see businesses make with autoresponders is to start out on the assumption that simply because someone is on your list or is willing to receive your autoresponder that they KNOW you and WANT to buy something from you.
But the most important role an email autoresponder can do is to build a relationship.
Before your write a word of copy in your autorespdonder you have to think of this as a process of getting to know someone, or more importantly, having them getting to know you.
You can write an autoresponder that sends some variation of the ‘buy my product’ message a number of times, but that’s not a relationship, thats just plain annoying.
So do this.
1. Give before you get. Send information that is actually helpful to your reader. If you get it right, they will read it and also appreciate it.
2. Plan to give more than once. Marketing basics say that a message needs to be heard at least 7 times before it starts to stand a chance of being remembered.
3. Make a clear offer once trust is established. OK, so you have given a series of good messages which are appreciated by your readers, then and only then can you ask for an order.
Here’s what I see with my clients. They write copy that says ‘buy my product’ repeatedly and they don’t sell anything.
We rewrite the email autoresponders and suddenly they start to generate new sales or new leads.
It’s not like a ninja marketing secret, it’s just good old fashioned marketing.
